Description  This excursion will visit the active Cumbre Vieja volcano of La Palma. It will begin with a 4-hour walk along the crest of the Cumbre Vieja to examine the volcanic vents and associated west-directed faulting of the 1949 eruption of the volcano, and consider the evidence for possible incipient instability of the west flank of the volcano. The vents to be visited will include the spectacular Hoyo Negro phreatomagmatic explosion crater. In the afternoon, the excursion will visit the sites of the 1677 and 1971 eruptions at San Antonio and Teneguía in the south of the island, and consider the implications of prehistoric phreatomagmatic activity for hazards in the island. Finally, we will visit the Fuente Santa thermal spring, buried by lavas of the 1677 eruption and recently relocated by excavation of a tunnel. Participants should bring walking boots, a hat and sun protection; water and a packed lunch will be provided.
