Description One of the most fundamental requirements for meaningful volcanic hazard assessment is an understanding of the nature and timing of past volcanic eruptions. Detailed field, petrologic, geochemical, geophysical, tectonic, and geochronologic studies of individual volcanic centers are critical in this regard. Documenting the evolution of volcanoes, the processes operating in the underlying magmatic systems, and the time scales over which those processes operate, are important for understanding the behaviour of volcanic eruptions and their potential triggers. This session will focus broadly on studies of individual volcanic eruptions and volcanic centers that provide the fundamental basis for assessing future volcanic hazards.
