Description Tourism and population growth are are bringing increasing numbers of people and greater amounts of infrastructure to volcanic regions of the world. This trend offers unique educational opportunities for public officials, community leaders, volcanologists, teachers, and tourism directors who seek to educate populations about volcanic risk. In this session our objective will be to share information about effective strategies that enhance awareness of volcanic risk. The convenors welcome discussion about society's perception of risk, best practices for risk communication in community awareness programs, school education programs, parks and museums, and the news media, as well as the use of folklore and local traditions in risk communication, and use of the Internet and other social media. It is our goal that session participants will return to their home countries with many effective ideas for volcano education and outreach in their communities.
